Major donors’ aid to developing countries fell by nearly 3% in 2011, breaking a long trend of annual increases. Disregarding years of exceptional debt relief, this was the first drop since 1997. Continuing tight budgets in OECD countries will put pressure on aid levels in coming years.

Aid to water and sanitation has sharply risen since 2001, at an average annual rate of 5% in real terms. In 2009-10, total annual average aid commitments to water and sanitation amounted to USD 8.3 billion, representing 7% of total sector allocable aid.

DAC Secretariat focus on donor performance and trends in ODA at the global level. In addition, the Secretariat produces studies on aid to specific sectors and themes, and makes available ready-made tables and charts on ODA by donor and recipient. Guidance on the use of DAC statistics for analytical purposes is also provided.
